There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a youth hunt—the early morning stillness, the anticipation, the lessons learned in patience and persistence, and the sheer excitement when everything comes together. Our recent Mississippi Youth Hunt was a perfect reminder of why it’s so important to introduce the next generation to hunting.
The Story: A Weekend of Turkey Hunting Success
I found myself leaving Marks Outdoors Turkey Day Friday like I was Dale Earnhardt at 2:30 PM sharp, heading south to Mississippi for the youth opener. I was meeting a close friend and his son, eager to help guide a young hunter in the turkey woods.
The first morning was tough—overcast and cool, not a single gobble to be heard. But we knew turkeys were nearby from a quick ride around the property the evening before. Just as we were debating moving spots, a few sweet notes from the Spur Master and Country Girl Mouth Yelper changed everything. In no time, three longbeards made their way into range. The crack of the 20-gauge echoed, and just like that, we went from zeroes to heroes—a fine gobbler down and a happy young’n with his first turkey!
The second morning brought a new challenge. With rain and lightning in the distance, I thought we were in for a washout. But as if on cue, a gobble rang out at the boom of thunder. We set up in a clear cut where my friend had been seeing some gobblers, and though the toms were henned up, a few sparing notes from the Country Girl Mouth Yelper caught the attention of a boss hen.
She came straight to us, and behind her were four longbeards and seven hens—a sight every turkey hunter dreams of. After a tense standoff, one gobbler broke away from the flock, and our young hunter put number two down.
The excitement on that kid’s face reminded me exactly why we do this—not just for the hunt, but for the love of the outdoors and the chance to pass the tradition forward.
Why It’s Important to Teach Kids to Hunt
This hunt was more than just filling tags—it was about sharing a time-honored tradition and instilling values that will last a lifetime.
1. Teaching Patience and Persistence
Hunting isn’t always about instant success. Our first morning started slow, but we stuck with it, made adjustments, and eventually, the work paid off. Learning that good things come with patience and effort is a lesson that extends far beyond the woods.
2. Connecting with Nature
In today’s world of screens and distractions, getting kids outdoors is more important than ever. Hunting teaches them to respect the land, understand wildlife, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. A morning in the woods beats a morning on a tablet every time.
3. Building Confidence and Responsibility
When a young hunter takes their first animal, they gain a sense of accomplishment and responsibility. They learn the importance of ethical hunting, firearm safety, and respecting the game they pursue. These lessons build confidence that carries over into every aspect of life.
4. Strengthening Family Bonds
Some of the best memories are made in a hunting blind or leaned against a tree with family and friends. Sharing these moments creates bonds that last a lifetime. Hunting brings people together in a way few other activities can.
5. Preserving the Hunting Tradition
If we don’t introduce kids to hunting, who will carry on the tradition? Every youth hunt is an investment in the future of the sport. By mentoring the next generation, we ensure that hunting, conservation, and outdoor heritage live on.
Take a Kid Hunting – It’s Worth It
This Mississippi Youth Hunt was a reminder of why mentoring young hunters matters. It’s not just about calling in birds or pulling the trigger—it’s about teaching, guiding, and passing down a love for the outdoors.
If you have the chance to take a youth hunting, do it. Teach them the sounds of the woods, the thrill of the chase, and the respect for the game. The joy on their face when it all comes together is worth more than any trophy.
